DEFENCE
SERVICES
Defence services offer excellent opportunities for
young people interested in making a career in Army,
Navy, and Air Force. Besides the remuneration and
benefits that these degrees offer, the prestige and
honour associated with them attracts the young with
a sense of adventure and patriotism. The recruitment
process and the training after that go on to create
an enviable lifestyle, both personal and professional.
MERCHANT NAVY
Ships or vessels in the sailor's jargon that
carry cargo or oil or passengers constitute the Merchant
Navy. Indian Merchant Navy ships are operated by private
and public sector shipping companies and manned by
trained navigators, marine engineers and crews. Few
professions can boast of high salary, allowance, duty-free
perks and foreign travel at as early an age as a Merchant
Navy crew. Jobs as shipping executives, harbor pilots,
surveyors, port officials, etc, are open to ex-Merchant
Navy personnel. A Merchant Navy aspirant must undergo
a rigorous on-the-job course. They have to pass stipulated
examinations to be promoted. The responsibility for
training of personnel for the Indian merchant navy
lies with the Government of India functioning through
the Ministry of Surface Transport. Training institutions
under the direct administrative control of Directorate
General of Shipping have been established.
