FILM
PRODUCTION AND ACTING
The Indian film industry has a reputation for being
the most prolific. It has also received the industry
status from the government.
The four main career options in film production are
film direction, cinematography or motion picture photography,
sound engineering and film editing. Among the institutes
offering specialization in different aspects of film-making
in India, the Film and Television Institute of India
(FTII), Pune, is the most popular. It offers specialization
in film direction, motion picture photography, sound
recording and sound engineering. Cinematography is
also offered as a diploma course in Film and Television
Institute of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Satyajit Ray Film
Institute, Kolkata, and Film and Television Institute,
Orissa.
Acting is an intensely competitive field and many
believe that actors, like journalists, are born, not
made. Talent and luck are still the most important
ingredients of success in this profession. Though
modeling is a popular mode of entry into the profession,
there are training schools and theatre groups that
can fetch entry into this profession. Notable among
them is the National Schools of Drama in Delhi. Stars
like Shahrukh Khan, Nandita Das, Shabana Azmi are
all products of the NSD. The school, fullyfinanced
by the Government of India, is a premier institute
that provides training to graduates in acting, design,
lighting and other aspects related to theatre and
dramatic arts. Photography as a career choice can
also prove lucrative, besides being creative. Photographers
are employed by newspapers, advertising agencies and
government agencies such as Press Information Bureau
and DAVP. The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University
at Masab Tank, Hyderabad, offers a course in professional
photography.
